In South Africa, Dr Shan Shan Jing began her global health journey as a medical student volunteering in township clinics. In Bangladesh, she joined the Women for Women mission alongside Ruma Khan and The Emirates Foundation. In Uganda, she performed reconstructive surgery for burns and congenital clefts. In Malawi, she taught hand surgery to local medical teams through the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH). In Zambia, she contributed to surgical training with BFIRST, helping to train local clinicians and support the establishment of the Zambian Hand Service.
From the earliest stages of her medical career, Dr Shan Shan Jing has been guided by a strong commitment to health equity, education, and the belief that healthcare should extend beyond the operating theatre and across borders. Her work in global health has enabled her to collaborate with exceptional teams and communities, united by a shared purpose — to restore, empower, and heal.
In both her clinical and charitable work, Dr Shan Shan Jing continues to mentor the next generation of surgeons, teaching medical students from London universities and the University of Cambridge. These experiences have shaped not only her understanding of surgery but also her perspective on humanity — recognising that true progress in medicine is measured not by recognition, but by the lives quietly changed.
Dr Shan Shan’s commitment to care has never ended at the clinic door.
